8th and 9th of May we celebrate special dates - Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation and the 72nd anniversary of the Victory over Nazism in World War II. Both events are significant, since forever changed the course of history and became a reference point of irreversible changes in the political map of the world and in the lives of many people.
These days our hearts filled with the most difficult feelings – joy, sorrow, grief and generosity. They give the opportunity once again to bow to those who gave us freedom, peace and won 72 years ago.
Then about three million Ukrainian soldiers never come back from the battlefield. Five and a half million people in Ukraine have been killed in occupied territory. The war destroyed almost 700 towns and 28,000 villages.
Today, Ukraine, facing with external aggression, values even more the great victory.
I thank veterans for this invaluable feat. They firmly knew what for they fought and what for their comrades gave their lives. There are things that can not be compromised under any circumstances. These things are freedom of people, dignity and peaceful life of homeland. It is important for everyone and makes us all united and strong nation.
Today I want to wish all of us to be worthy grandchildren and great-grandchildren of soldiers-heroes, soldiers-winners. Never give up. The only way we can ensure a happy, prosperous and peaceful future of our country, our Ukraine. I'm sure we can do it!
